The position as a Staff Nurse at the OU College of Nursing Take Charge Program is varied.
- Requires equal dedication both to the office and to the clinic.
- The Staff Nurse will work in clinics an average of 1-2 days per week to include some Saturdays. In these clinics, she will be responsible for screening for breast and cervical cancer (Pap tests and breast exams).
- The office portion of this position includes reporting and patient interaction by telephone.
- The Staff Nurse must follow and plan for the patient’s care from beginning to end.
- The office can get hectic at times so it is important that the Staff Nurse have a strong attention to detail, good organization techniques and an enthusiasm for her work.

Diabetes Nurse Educator |
Performs specialized nursing education related to diabetes and endocrinology. Provides initial and subsequent education related to diagnosis, management, and ongoing care of a child with diabetes. Works with Research and Program Director (PharmD), Medical Director (MD, Diabetes/Endocrinology), Lead Diabetes Educator (RN). Out patient specialty clinic and clinical research center setting. Close working relationship with Research and Program Director (PharmD), Medical Doctors (MD, Diabetes/Endocrinology), Lead Diabetes Educator (RN), diabetes dietitians nurses, social workers and psychologist.
Duties:
1. Provides education pertaining to basic and specialized skills necessary for families to care for a child or adolescent with diabetes.
2. Assists with development of diabetes and endocrine related educational materials.
3. Takes and records various patient histories.
4. Prepares patients for examination by physician; has charts ready and assists during the examination as needed.
5. Collects samples from patients, such as blood and urine, and insures that all information needed is available to physician (x-rays, lab reports, etc.)
6. Administers medication (orally and by injection, as ordered by physician).
7. Take and records various readings, such as heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, height and weight, temperature, etc.
8. Coordinate patient appointments, and answers routine and complex diabetes related questions for patients.
9. Assists with non-diabetic (endocrine) patient care.
10. Assists with diabetes or endocrine research.
11. Assists with publication of research data.
12. Will answer telephone inquiries and provide telephone advice protocol driven advice for parents of children and adolescents with diabetes.
13. Performs related duties as assigned or as required to successfully fulfill function of the position.
Department Preferences:
Bachelor's degree in Nursing and Certification as a Diabetes Educator.
Must be able to communicate well with children and adolescents and their families.
Must maintain detailed records and telephone communications with patients
and families.
Will work closely with Medical Director and Diabetes program specialists and
diabetes nurses on maintaining blood sugar control and adherence of patients
to overall diabetes management plan.
