American Indian Student Success Program
The Indian Health Service (IHS) has awarded the College of Nursing a grant to benefit qualified Native American nursing students who are interested in completing the Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. The grant is entitled, "American Indian Nursing Student Success program."
Purpose:
The purpose of this grant is to recruit, retain, and graduate eligible Native American nursing students from the baccalaureate program at the OU College of Nursing. The overall goal is to prepare Native American Nurses to provide health care services to the state's Native American citizens.
Participants will benefit from the following grant activities:
- Academic counseling and resource referral
- Scholarships (limited number, pending availability)
- Networking and support through the Native American Council for student nurses
- Access to current Native American related health care research
- Announcements of nursing conferences related to Native American health care
- Announcement of job opportunities
Criteria for scholarship selection:
- Admission to the OU College of Nursing
- Full-time student status
- Financial need
- Proof of Tribal Membership
- Card or letter issued from your tribe verifying your membership
- Proof of tribal blood quantum - CDIB card or letter issued from BIA
- Two letters of recommendation-(Send directly to: Project Director, AI Nursing Student Success Program, University of Oklahoma College of Nursing, P.O. Box 26901, Oklahoma City, OK 73126)
- Teacher or faculty which can speak to your academic abilities
- Personal character recommendation
- Respected person in your community who can speak to your community involvement, for example: project participation, volunteering; leadership skills; meetings attended; church activities; and tribal activities
- Personal interview with the grant project director.
- Commitment to serve American Indians - This scholarship is subject to a service "payback" obligation to the IHS
