Undergraduate - Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements

  • A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0.
    In general, the College of Nursing does not honor academic forgiveness or reprieve policies.  Each attempt at each course from each institution previously attended will be calculated into the Cumulative GPA.
  • A science grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0.
    In general, only Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Microbiology and General Chemistry will be calculated. No other science courses will be used to calculate this Science GPA.
    In general, the College of Nursing does not honor academic forgiveness or reprieve policies.  Each attempt at each of these four courses from each institution previously attended will be calculated into the overall Science GPA.
  • A grade of "C" or better in all prerequisite courses.
  • Credit hour transfer requirements must be met for each prerequisite courses. 
    The University of Oklahoma is on a Semester credit-hour system.  Students completing coursework at an institution on a Quarter credit-hour system are advised that coursework will transfer based on a 0.67 transfer rate.
    For example: a 3 credit-hour course on the Quarter credit-hours system will transfer as 2.01 Semester credit-hours and will not meet the transfer credit hour requirement for most prerequisite courses.  Please contact an academic advisor for further advisement. 
  • Completion of at least 30 semester hours of prerequisites at the time the application for admission is submitted
  • All prerequisites must be completed prior to first enrollment in nursing coursework.
  • Computer Requirements For OUCN Students
    Effective Fall 1998 all students will be required to own a computer. Specific computer and software requirements will be shared with students at orientation. Financial aid may be obtained for the purchase of required equipment.

Students may complete the required prerequisite courses at The University of Oklahoma, Norman Campus, or at another accredited college or university. All prerequisite courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C.  All prerequisites must be completed prior to first enrollment in nursing coursework

General Education courses required for all applicants, except:

  • Items 1-4 may be waived for those beginning college level course work prior to the Fall 1990 term, or for those with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree,  a Bachelor's degree or higher.  These items are not waived for students holding an Associate of Applied Science Degree.
  • Item 4 may also be met by two semesters of the same language in College or two years of the same language in High School.  A High School transcript may be required.  Can not combine High School and College credit to meet requirement.
  • Item 5 may only be waived for those beginning College level course work prior to the Fall 1990 term, or those with a Bachelor's degree or higher.

*  Students are advised to take separate Human Anatomy and Human Physiology courses. Combined A&P I and A&P II courses may not meet the OU Nursing requirement regardless of transfer equivalency to the OU Norman campus. This applies to students attending Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) as well as other select schools. Please consult with an advisor if you have any doubt.

+SOC 1113 is just one example of a course that can be taken to meet this requirement.  For more classes that will meet this requirement, please contact an academic advisor.

Academic Advisement

Academic advisors are available to assist you with transcript evaluations and with your application process.  If you have additional questions you may request an appointment or transcript evaluation from an Academic Advisor

Evaluations may be completed by

  1. compiling transcripts from all institutions previously attended
  2. including a cover letter indicating your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, the nursing track you are interested in and your intended start term
  3. mailing transcripts and cover letter in one package to the following address:

The advisor will contact you by e-mail with any questions.  Your evaluation will be returned to you by e-mail.  Allow up to 4 weeks for evaluation.
